Will E85 Flex-Fuel Cars Cost More? New Technology Could Raise Prices for Buyers.
With the introduction of E85 ethanol-based fuel in India, interest in flex-fuel vehicles is also increasing. Recently, Maruti Suzuki launched its first flex-fuel vehicle, the WagonR Flex-Fuel. This technology is much more environmentally friendly than the regular technology. Along with this, another important question has come to the fore – how much more expensive will flex-fuel vehicles be compared to regular petrol vehicles? According to experts, a number of technical changes are required to run a car on E85 fuel. Due to the high level of ethanol, this fuel can cause rapid corrosion of several parts of the car. That is why the fuel tank, fuel lines, injectors, engine control unit or ECU and some other important components have to be specially designed. These additional changes increase the cost of manufacturing the car. Experts believe that the price of flex-fuel vehicles can be up to 1 lakh taka more than that of a regular petrol vehicle of the same model. This gap is similar to that of CNG vehicles. In this case, the price increases slightly due to additional technology and equipment. However, if manufacturers want to popularize this technology in the market, they can bear a part of the additional cost themselves in the initial stage. In that case, the price increase may be relatively low.
