Mission Cemetery
Mission Cemetery, Serampore is one of the most historically significant burial grounds in Serampore, reflecting the town’s deep-rooted colonial and missionary heritage. Established during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the cemetery is closely associated with the Danish settlement period and the pioneering work of Christian missionaries who helped shape Serampore’s identity. This serene and heritage-rich site is best known as the resting place of William Carey, a prominent missionary, linguist, and one of the founders of the Serampore Mission. Carey, along with his colleagues, played a vital role in the spread of education, printing, and social reform in India. The cemetery also holds the graves of other missionaries, scholars, and notable figures connected to Serampore’s early development.
